What is the real name of Ravana according to the Ramayana?

Ravan was not called Ravan since birth. But he was called Dashagriva or Dashanana (demon with ten heads).

Lord Shiva gave him the name Ravan.

Why did Lord Shiva named him Ravan…..the story is as below:-

Everyone is aware that Ravan was a great devotee of Lord Shiva and he used to worship Shiva day and night. Ravana wanted to take Lord Shiva from Kailash and bring him to Lanka.

It is said that Ravan to bring Lord Shiva to Lanka and lifted Mount Kailash but at that time Lord Shiva was meditating with his feet up and he did not want to go with Ravan, so Lord Shiva pressed the mountain with his toe crushing Ravana's forearms and fingers. The demon let out such a shuddering cry of pain that Lord Shiva named the demon Ravan after his cry (rava). Ravan was only released from his predicament after 1,000 years of pleading to the great God. He started praising Lord Shiva, which in today's time is called Shiva Tandava Stotra. This is how Lord Shiva named him Ravan.

Ravan pleading to Lord Shiva.
