Himalayan Writing Retreat

Kritika Pandey told us the things she kept in mind while writing her short story "The Great Indian Tee and Snakes".

Her story went on to become the Overall Winner of the Commonwealth Short Story Prize in 2020 - selected from some six thousand entries across 53 countries.

"The choice of Samosas as the snack wasn't as obvious in the beginning because Jharkhand street food is Burras and Kachlis but I wanted the story to be as Indian as it was Jharkhandi - hence samosas.

At first the men who looked like carrots were men in saffron bandanas, but I wanted to employ some absurdity to undercut the tragic theme of the story..." she says.

Clearly, nuance and detail have a huge role to play in writing a great short story. The Commonwealth prize is just one of many accolades that Kritika Pandey has won.
