Why was Ravana not afraid of anyone?
Why was Ravana not afraid of anyone?
Wrong - Ravana was afraid of one person during his lifetime
It was not Lord Hanuman, Lord Ram, or Lord Shiva. In fact, Ravana is many things - a scholar, a kidnapper, a land grabber. a brother, a husband, a father and many other things for different people. But he was never a coward.
But as fate would have it he lost his wisdom, his kingdom, and his wife’s respect as well. The Ramayana proves that intelligence, skill, and bhakti is nothing if you are not wise. He was quite unwise in kidnapping Sita devi.
So here is your answer: Lord Ravana was afraid of none other than - Vaali (brother of Sugreeva)
But why?
Ravana was once defeated by Vaali. Upon defeating the then mighty emperor of Lanka, Vaali tied him up in his tail and went on a world tour. Humbled by his strength and feat, Ravana called a truce
While this is only in one version of the Ramayana (mostly folklore), this is indeed a fact that Ravana called a truce with Vaali because a friendship is better with a stronger opponent than being a foe.
Wait, why did i say in one version?
The answer - Kalpabheda (Difference in incidents between different Kalpas)
Kalpabheda means the difference in how events occur when the Kalpa resets. HInduism measures time not in minutes but in Yugas, Mahayugas, Kalpas, Brahmajeevanam etc. They run into billions of years in simpler terms.
So why say bheda? For a difference, something has to happen again…
Yes, according to Hinduism, time is cyclical therefore the events occur and re-occur continuously. However, even in a photocopy there are tiny mistakes / differences. Events also occur slightly different in each Kalpa
Now what happens if incidents take place a little differently in each Kalpa? Kalpabheda happens. Some interesting facts about the Ramayana are:
In one version, Rama and Ravana fight with each other and kill each other. Rama loses his life but regains it back once Sanjeevani is given (similar to how Lakshmana receives the Sanjeevani medicine)
In another version, Ravana is foretold that his firstborn daughter would be the cause of his death. So he leaves his baby daughter in a basket and leaves it in a river. As that river gently takes the baby girl ahead, it accumulates lot of soil and twigs. Eventually it reaches a spot and accumulates the mud partly covering the basket. That’s why Sita devi is regarded as the Bhoodevi’s daughter. Yes, Ravana is the father of Sita devi and Rama is Ravana’s son-in-law
In a version, Sita devi never reaches Lanka. Instead she disappears into thin air to reappear in Janaka rajya (her foster parents’ kingdom) while a Maya Sita (her shadow) takes her place who is eventually kidnapped by Ravana. That is why Ravana carries Sita devi along with the earth without touching her - because he cannot touch a shadow
In regional folklore, Ravana is cursed that if he touches a woman his head will explode into a thousand pieces. Hence, he kidnaps Sita devi with the earth underneath her feet.
In a version, Lord Rama visits Ravana for a muhurtam to begin the war. Knowing that Lord Rama is a Vishnu avatar, Ravana respectfully accepts his fate and appoints the divya muhurtam which is auspicious for Lord Rama. Later on that is why Lord Rama tells Lakshmana to learn the art of rajyaparipaalana from Ravana
There are many versions because all of them are true, just not in the same Kalpa!
