History of India:-When Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel died
Jan 24
History of India:-When Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel died, an hour later, then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru made an announcement.
Immediately after the announcement, an order was issued that same day. This order contained two points. The first was to immediately withdraw the government car provided to Sardar Patel. The second was to require that Home Ministry secretaries and officials who wished to travel to Bombay for Sardar Patel's funeral travel at their own expense.
However, the then-Home Secretary, V.P. Menon, did not mention Prime Minister Nehru's letter in his impromptu meeting and, without informing the officials, sent all the officials to Bombay at his own expense.
Nehru then sent a Cabinet advisory to then-President Rajendra Prasad, advising him not to attend Sardar Patel's funeral.
However, Rajendra Prasad ignored the Cabinet's advice and decided to attend the funeral.
But when Nehru learned of this, he sent C. Rajagopalachari there and handed him the official memorial letter instead of the President to read.
Following this, a demand arose within the Congress party that the government should do something in memory of such a great leader and build a memorial for him. Nehru initially opposed it, but later agreed to do something.
A few days later, Nehru announced that Sardar Patel was a leader of farmers, and therefore, they would dig wells in villages in the name of such a great and legendary leader. No one knows when this plan was started or when it was discontinued.
Following this, Purushottam Das Tandon, a veteran Congress leader who had put forward the name of Sardar Patel against Nehru in the election for Congress President, was expelled from the party.
I am forced to recall all these things when I see these Congressmen chanting the name of Sardar Patel.
