Is it true that Ravana was defeated by Kartavirya Arjuna and Vali in battle?
Is it true that Ravana was defeated by Kartavirya Arjuna and Vali in battle?
Based on Valmiki Ramayana, first six books, Ravana wasn't defeated by anyone till the Lanka war.
Sugreeva is the first being to defeat Ravana, in physical duel, by exhausting him and forcing him to use Illusions to save his skin.
And approaching each other, they strove to slay each other, like unto two cats seated, momentarily encountering each other over some food. And the lord of monkeys and Rāvana, accomplished in fight, coursed the arena, displaying wonderful mandalas,¹⁰⁴ various _sthānas_¹⁰⁵ curious _gomātrakas_¹⁰⁶ gatapratyāgatas, tiraschi-nagatas, vakragatas, parimokshas, varjanas, paridhāvanas, abhidravanas,¹⁰⁷ āplāvanas,¹⁰⁸ savigrahāvasthānas, parāvrittas,¹¹⁰ apāvrittas,¹¹¹ _apadrutas_¹¹² avaplutas,¹¹³ apanyastas,¹¹⁴ and upanyastas. In the meanwhile the Raksha attempted to put forth his power of illusion. Knowing this, the king of monkeys shot into the sky. And Rāvana, overpowered by fatigue and out of breath, thus baffled by the monkey-king, stood where he was. Thus the master of the foremost monkeys, securing fame in fight, beat the night-ranger, causing him to experience fatigue. And bounding beyond the spacious sky, the offspring of the Sun came to the side of Rāma in the midst of the monkey-forces.
Further, was beaten by Lakshman, Hanuman and Rama. Except these four, he didn't lose to anyone. Kartavirya Arjuna or Vali beating him is mentioned only in Uttara Kanda of Ramayana and Puranas and is baseless and contradicts several instances in the first six books of Ramayana.
Vali can easily crush him into a pulp in a physical duel. But would lose if Råvana use celestial weapons.
But I don't think Kartavirya can best him in any case. Neither in physical duel or using weapons. Kartavirya simply doesn't have any feats to rival that of Råvana in any way. Both of them were formidable forces mainly due to boons. But It took way more effort for Rama to kill Ravana compared to Parashurama killing Kartavirya Arjuna. Rama is considered superior to Parashurama in every aspect btw., even clearly established in Valmiki Ramayana itself.
Ravana holds multiple infallible spears that can destroy Karttavirya's divine spear, eliminating Karttavirya's only advantage over him. Beyond this weapon, Ravana's vast arsenal, boons, and powers far surpass anything Karttavirya possesses. Especially when donned in the divine armor of Brahma. Even if Ravana is chopped into pieces, he could easily regenerate. Ravana's heart, his sole vulnerable spot, is protected by Brahma's divine armor, rendering him nearly invincible. The only weapon capable of piercing this armor is Brahma's infallible shaft, a weapon that Karttavirya does not possess. In a hypothetical duel, Ravana would easily defeat Karttavirya, as there is no way to put him down while he wears his armor. And Ravana’s offensive power is no joke, as seen in his final duel. However, without his armor, Karttavirya Arjuna may be able to defeat him.
