Today is the marriage anniversary of Rukmini and Vasudeva-Krishna. On this auspicious day the Vivavah Utsav(marriage ceremony) will be solemnised at Jagannath Temple @ Puri.
KRISHNA'S MATRIMONIAL ALLIANCE WITH THE KINGDOM OF VIDHARVA :
Rukmini was the daughter of Bhishmaka, the ruler of Vidharbha and sister of Rukmi. Her marriage was fixed with Sishupala, the king of Chedi. However, Rukmini was not interested in Sishupala, as she was in love with Krishna and wished to marry Krishna only. The marriage ceremony between Sishupala and Rukmini was about to be solemnised, Rukmini secretly sent a message to Krishna calling him from Dwarka to get her abducted while she would visit the Shakti temple in the city of Vidharbha.
Thus, a scheme was plotted to abduct Rukmini away from the palace. As per the plan, Rukmini came out of the palace with the pretext of visiting the devi temple as part of her marriage formalities done on the eve of her marriage. No sooner Rukmini came to the temple Krishna pulled her to take her away from Vidharbha on a chariot and departed for Dwaraka. On hearing the news Rukmi, the brother of Rukmini got angry with Krishna and declared a war against Krishna and Balarama in which Rukmi had to face the defeat in the hands of Balarama. Having reached Dwaraka Krishna got married to Rukmini in a traditional manner. This event is called Rukmini haran or abduction of Rukmini. This marriage eventually brought Vidharva under the control of Krihna. Every year on the occasion of Nirjala Ekadashi in the month of Jyestha the episode of Rukmini haran symbolically in the Jagannath temple at Puri in Odisha.
