Why did Hanuman not fight with Indrajit during the battle with Ravan's army at Lanka (Ramayana)?
Why did Hanuman not fight with Indrajit during the battle with Ravan's army at Lanka (Ramayana)?
Hanuman actually fought with Indrajit.
The two warriors faced each other on two different occasions, first one- when Hanuman went to Lanka to search Sita(as per Sundar Kand); second one- When Laxman went to kill Indrajit(as per Yudh Kand)!
Now let's analyse the battles-
1) Sundar Kand; Sraga 48 - Hanuman vs Indrajit
Ravan sent Indrajit to kill Akshay's(his son) slayer- Hanuman; Indrajit arrived at the spot where Hanuman was present; now battle begins~
Those two warriors, Hanuma and Indrajit, possessing great velocity and a great strength as also fearless in combat, confronted in the battle like Indra the Lord of celestials and Ravana the Lord of demons who tightened hostility with each other.
Hanuma, of immeasurable strength, having expanded his body, aborted the swiftness of arrows of that Indrajit, the great chariot-warrior, the wielder of a bow and well-renowned in battle. Hanuma wheeled about in the path of wind-god, his father.
Hanuman fought with bare hands, Indrajit displayed his elite archery skills, both were very swift, unable to touch or damage each other.
"Then, the heroic Indrajit, the destroyer of strong enemies, discharged long and sharp-pointed arrows, having beautiful feathers, provided with picturesque golden shafts, with good inclination and as swift as lightning. Hearing the rattling sound of the chariot and the sound of wooden tomtoms, kettledrums and war-drums as also the sound of the bow-string being plucked, Hanuma sprang up again."
Description of Indrajit's weapons, keep reading๐
"Making the total target of Indrajit who was skilled in hitting his target useless, Hanuma the great monkey swiftly wheeled about between the arrows. Hanuma, the son of wind-god, again stayed in front of his arrows and stretching out his hands, sprang up. Those two warriors, full of swiftness and skilled in their war-fare, staged an excellent battle, which captivated the minds of all beings."
Indrajit known for his extraordinary archery skills, missed targets with his arrows while fighting Hanuman, such was his agility!
The fight went on, Indrajit realised that it is impossible to even tame Hanuman, killing him was a huge milestone for the son of Ravan, as evident ๐
"Indrajit, who knows the true nature of missiles, feeling certain that he was incapable of being killed, bound that Hanuma, the son of wind-god, by that presided over by Brahma the creator."
So he fired an arrow that was able to trap Hanuman and capture him, but did Indrajit really succeed in capturing him? Answer lies here๐
“Since I am being protected by Brahma, Indra and the wind-god, I do not have fear, eventhough I am fastened by the missile. Even if I were captured by the demons, a great advantage is foreseen. There will be a dialogue with Ravana. Therefore, let the enemies capture me.”
That was a deliberate action of Hanuman to be captured to meet Ravan and convey the message; he had long term plans๐ฅ๐ clearly indicates who had the upper hand!
2) 2nd battle from Yudh Kand(Sarga -86~) Hanuman vs Indrajit again
It turned into Laxman vs Indrajit finally, but when Hanuman and his team along with Laxman and Vivishan went to the secret place to slay Indrajit- Hanuman challenged him for a physical duel
Let's analyse~
That Indrajit saw Hanuma, the foremost of monkeys, looking like a mountain, fearlessly killing his enemies. He spoke the following words tohis charioteer: "Take the chariot to the place where that monkey is standing. If we neglect him, he will surely destroy our demons”
Hanuman started to slay demons as usual, he was actually fierce and drew Indrajit's attention towards him.
Coming close to Hanuma, that unconquerable Indrajit hurled swords, sharp-edged spears and axes on the head of Hanuma.
Indrajit started to attack Hanuman;
Receiving those terrible weapons, that Hanuma spoke, seized as he was, with great rage, the following words: "O evil-minded Indrajit! If you are valiant, fight with me. Coming nearer to Hanuma, you will not return alive. O foolish fellow! If you enter into a duel with me, fight with your arms. Withstand my force in the battle-field. Then you will be considered as the best among the demons."
Hanuman directly challenged Indrajit for a duel๐ฅ absolute rage mode;
But then Vivishan suggested that Laxman should take on Indrajit and kill him with his arrows(Indrajit was well equipped at that moment) as evident ๐
Vibhishana told Lakshmana in the following words that while with bow upraised, Indrajit sought to kill Hanuma. "Having seated in a chariot, Indrajit, who conquered Indra, is seeking to kill Hanuma. O Lakshmana! Kill that Indrajit with your terrific arrows of incomparable workmanship, which ward off the enemies and putting an end to their lives."
And then one of the most dangerous battle (Laxman vs Indrajit) took place of earth!
So conclusion: fight b/w Hanuman and Indrajit didn't happen here tho former challenged him, later chose to fight with Laxman instead, even if he fought Hanuman, what would be the results? He couldn't even tame Hanuman in Ashok Van(Sundar Kand incident) and later had different plans, that was not even a fight for Hanuman as evident from his strategy!
But here, it was a battle ground, where death battles were to take place; and morover a rageful Hanuman, fully ready to slay enemies, challenged Indrajit for a fight- I don't need to explain further that who was stronger if a fight took place.๐(giving reference of Sundar Kand incidents)
