*"RUKHI SUKHI KHAYAKE.. .”* By Khushwant Singh @ 98

 *"RUKHI SUKHI KHAYAKE.. .”*

By Khushwant Singh @ 98

Coming on to 98 yrs and still earning more than I did in my younger days, people ask me how I manage to do it. They regard me as an expert on longevity. I have pronounced on the subject before; I will repeat it with suitable amendments based on my experience in the past two years.

Earlier I had written that longevity is in one’s genes: children of long-living parents are likely to live longer than those born to short-lived parents. This did not happen in my own family. My parents who died at 90 and 94 had five children, four sons and a daughter.

The first to go was the youngest of the siblings. Next went my sister who was the fourth. My elder brother who was three years older than me went a couple of years ago. Two of us remain; I, who will soon be 98, and my younger brother, a retired Brigadier three years younger than me and in much better health. He looks after our ancestral property.

Nevertheless, I still believe gene is the most important factor in determining one’s life-span. More important than analysing longevity is to cope with old age and make terms with it.

As we grow older, we are less able to exercise our limbs. _We have to devise ways to keep them active._ Right into my mid-eighties, I played tennis every morning, did rounds of Lodhi gardens in winter and swam for an hour in summer. I am unable to do this any more. The best way to overcome this handicap is regular massages. I have tried different kinds and was
disappointed with the oil drip and smearing of oil on the body. A good massage needs powerful hands going all over one’s body from the skull to the toes. I have this done at least once a day or at times twice a day.

I am convinced that this has kept me going for so long. _Equally important is the need to cut down drastically one’s intake of food and drink_. I start my mornings with guava juice. It is tastier and more health-giving than orange or any other fruit juice. My breakfast is one scrambled egg on toast. My lunch is usually patli kichri with dahi or a vegetable. I skip
afternoon tea. _*In the evening, I take a peg of single malt whisky. It gives me a false appetite.*_

Before I eat supper, I say to myself “Do not eat too much.” I also believe that a meal should have just one kind of vegetable or meat followed by a pinch of chooran. _*It is best to eat alone and in silence. Talking while eating does not do justice to the food and you swallow a lot of it. For me no more Punjabi or Mughlai food. I find South India idli, sambhar and grated coconut easier to digest and healthier*._

Never allow yourself to be constipated. The stomach is a storehouse of all kinds of ailments. Our sedentary life tends to make us constipated. Keep your bowels clean however you can: by laxatives, enemas, glycerin suppositories, whatever. Bapu Gandhi fully understood the need to keep bowels clean. Besides, taking an enema every day, he gave enemas to his women admirers.

Impose strict discipline on your daily routine. If necessary, use a stop-watch. I have breakfast exactly at 6.30 am lunch at noon, drink at 7 pm, supper at 8. Try to develop peace of mind. For this you must have a healthy bank account. Shortage of money can be very demoralising. It does not have to be in crores, but enough for your future needs and possibility of falling ill. Never lose your temper, it takes a heavy toll and jangles one’s nerves. Never tell a lie. Always keep your national motto in mind: Satyamev Jayate - only truth triumphs.

Give generously. Remember you can’t take it with you. You may give to your children, servants or charity. You will feel better. There is joy in giving. Drive out envy of those who have done better than you in life. A Punjabi verse sums up: Rookhi Sookhi Khai kay Thanda Paani Pee, Na Veykh paraayee chonparian na Tarssain jee (Eat dry bread and drink cold water Pay no heed or envy those who smear their chapattis with ghee). _Do not conform to the tradition of old people spending time in prayer and long hours in places of worship. That amounts to conceding defeat. Instead take up a hobby like gardening, growing bonsai, helping children of your neighborhood with their homework._

A practice which I have found very effective is to fix my gaze on the flame of candle, empty my mind of everything, but in my mind repeat Aum Shanti, Aum Shanti, Aum Shanti. It does work. I am at peace with the world. We can’t all be Fauja Singh who at 100 run a marathon race but we can equal him in longevity and creativity. I wish all my readers long, healthy lives
full of happiness.

Akbar and Birbal

Akbar asked Birbal to look for five biggest idiots in his state and produce them in his court within a month.

After a month's extensive search operations, Birbal brought to the court only two people!

"But I asked for five", Akbar angrily asked.

"Give me a chance to present them one by one", Birbal pleaded and went on to present his idiots:

"Maharaj, this man, while travelling in a bullock cart, was keeping his luggage on his head so as not to hurt the bullocks. He is the first idiot.
( *In corporate parlance , the ones who take all load on themselves and not delegate* )

Pointing to the second man Birbal continued, "And this man here is the second idiot. Some grass grew on the roof of his thatched house and he was trying to force his cow climb up a ladder to graze on them."
( *In corporate parlance, these are those who set unrealistic targets and force others to achieve it without realising their capabilities and competency* )

Birbal continued, "Maharaj, there were a lot of importants jobs for me to do in the state, but I ignored them and wasted a precious month in searching for idiots. According to me I am the third idiot."
( *Idiots who rush obediently for wrong job assignments without any qualms* )

Birbal paused here for a moment.

"Who are the fourth and fifth idiots?", Akbar thundered.

"Beg your pardon, Maharaj", Birbal continued, "You are the King and are responsible for the wellbeing of the entire state and its people. You need wise persons to help you oversee the state affairs. Instead of looking for wise people you engaged me to look for idiots. According to me you are the fourth idiot.
( *Bad leaders who make poor strategies and want idiots to follow blindly* )

And, Maharaj, the person who is reading this Whatsapp message, keeping aside all his high priority assignments, oblivious of pressing needs of his familiy,  just to learn who is the fifth idiot, is the fifth idiot himself. What do you say, Maharaj?" Birbal concluded.

Akbar said, "Post it immediately in all groups.

Empathy

I took the twins to Walmart today for our weekly grocery shopping. An older woman approached me in the cereal aisle, and I instantly sighed in annoyance because I knew the typical ‘twin questions’ were about to start pouring out of her mouth. When I go out in public, I always plan for an additional 20 minutes just for answering questions about twins, and frankly, it’s become tedious.

She neared my cart and stopped. ‘Here we go again,’ I thought. She asked all the typical things, told me how sweet they were, and continued to babble on with the boys. I was antsy, and just ready to go. I turned to look down the aisle, hoping she would take the hint I was ready to leave, and as I did she put her hand on top of mine that was resting on the cart. ‘I know you probably hate this and I’m sorry to take up so much of your time. You see, I lost my only grandchild last year, and about the only time I see kids his age is when I do my grocery shopping,’ she said.
Suddenly, time didn’t matter. ‘Well, we are about to go look at the fish, you wanna follow us over there and watch them play for a bit?’ Her eyes lit up. ‘I would love that.’ We went over and I got the boys out. She spent about 15 minutes watching them bounce around and scream out ‘FISHY FISHY FISHY’ when finally she looked over to me and said, ‘You don’t know what I would give to be able to hear my grandson laugh one last time.’ I couldn’t find any words, so I stood in silence, grieving for her.

‘May I hug your boys?’ I nodded. ‘Thank you so much for giving me your time, I know your hands are full,’ she said. ‘No really, it was my pleasure.’ She bent down to hug Darrio, my not as friendly twin, and he reached his arms out and said, ‘LUH YOU!!’ She hugged Dheigo and then hugged me, and said, ‘I love all 3 of you, too’ and headed toward the check out.

Do you know what my point is? My point is how quickly my attitude changed once I connected with her as another human being with feelings.
The woman taking too long in the drop off line in the morning? What if her child has to go to his dad’s for the weekend and she won’t get another hug for 3 long days?

The man driving slow when you’re in a rush to work? What if he’s going slow because he knows he is going to be laid off and is worried about his future?

The annoying little kid down the road who always bangs on your door? What if he doesn’t get attention at home and just wants a friend?

It made me wonder; how much nicer would we all be if we knew one another’s struggles

Sacrifice /Seva / Service

A doctor entered the hospital in a hurry after being called in for an urgent surgery on a child. He had answered the call as quickly as he possible could, changed his clothes & went directly to the surgery block.

He found the boy’s father pacing in the hall waiting for the doctor.
On seeing him, the dad yelled: “Why have you taken all this time to come? Don’t you know that my son’s life is in danger? Don’t you have any sense of responsibility?”
The doctor smiled & said: “I am sorry, I wasn’t in the hospital & I came as fast as I could after receiving the call, now please calm down so that I can do my work and not delay treatment to your son for any longer”
“Calm down?!, replied the father “What if your son was in this room right now, would you calm down? If your own son was dying now what would you do??”
The doctor smiled again & replied: “I will say what Job said in the Holy Book “From dust we came & to dust we return, blessed be the name of God”. Doctors cannot prolong lives. Go & intercede for your son, we will do our best by God’s grace”
“Giving advice when we’re not involved is so easy” Murmured the father under his breath.
The surgery took some hours after which the doctor came out happy, “Thank goodness, your son is saved!” And without waiting for the father’s reply he carried on his way running and said to the father. “If you have any questions, ask the nurse!!”
“Why is he so arrogant? He couldn’t wait some minutes so that I ask about my son’s state” Commented the father when seeing the nurse minutes after the doctor left.
The nurse answered, tears coming down her face: “His son died last week in a road accident, he was at the funeral when we called him for your son’s surgery. Now that he saved your son’s life, he has left running to finish grieving for his own son.”

KINDNESS

 KINDNESS

1.When I was a fresh mom with two under three my card got declined in the checkout line. The baby was in the car seat, the two-year-old was asking for bubble gum and chocolate bars. I felt like I could just melt into the floor.

Without missing a beat, the man behind me in line handed the cashier his card. ‘I’ve got it.’ He said.

That was ten years ago, and I will never forget it.

When I worked at a coffee shop, we had someone buy their own coffee and then anonymously buy the next person in lines coffee just saying, ‘pay it forward’. The next person was shocked to hear their coffee was covered and said, ‘well I want to buy the one for the next costumer’. The pay-it-forward lasted most of the afternoon with people buying other people’s drinks. My friend at the cash register was near tears by the end of her shift.

2.I won’t ever forget that day and I doubt she has either.

One time in the Target line a mom with a brand-new infant and two littles who were crying and clinging to her legs asked if I might hold her baby for a minute. I took that baby and rocked her in my arms until she stopped fussing.

I bet that mom remembers that day, I know I do.

When my toddler was somewhere between threenager and fournado she threw I giant tantrum in a shopping center. I held her on a park bench while she screamed like I was her kidnapper. A couple older ladies stopped and said, ‘You’re doing an AMAZING job mama, hang in there!!’

3.I will never ever forget them or their words that day.

In a train depot in France we were lost and confused trying to figure out where to go. An older man sitting near us accidentally dropped some cash on the ground. My daughter who was six found it and returned it to him. He and his friend loaded us up with snacks from their bags and then in broken English asked if we needed help. They ended up walking us all the way to our next train and riding it with us for a while just to make sure we didn’t get lost.

We won’t ever forget those two men.

One time on a family road trip we stopped at a roadside cafe to get lunch. When we went to pay, we found out that another couple had already bought it saying that we had a ‘sweet family’.

4.You better believe we will remember that forever.

Kindness is so powerful. It can be such a little thing like buying someone’s coffee or giving an encouraging word to someone who could use it. You just never know the impact it might have. My guess is that most of us remember the times that someone stepped out of their own life just to bless ours.”
