Was Meghnada capable of defeating warriors like Arjuna, Karna, Lakshmana, Bhishma, and Dronacharya without using his illusions?
Indrajit’s illusions(becoming invisible) were never a problem for either Rama or Lakshmana. In fact it' wasn't that indomitable either..
Vibhishana used his maya to cut through Indrajit’s maya and saw his terrible form after he knocked out Rama and Lakshmana using serpents.
And the monkeys, surveying the sky as well as all directions, could not see Rāvana’s son in battle enveloped with illusion. And then Bibhishana by means of illusion saw his brother’s son staying before, hidden by illusion. And Bibhishana saw that hero of incomparable deeds, who had no compeer in the field and who had energy, fame and prowess,—as he remained invisible in consequence of the Boon received from Brahma.
So it's an overhyped ability. Even if he was invisible, it was easily possible to track him bt aiming at the direction where the arrows struck the opponents. In fact, both Rama and Lakshmana pierced him with several celestial weapons while he remained invisible.
And being hurt with Nārachas, like unto mountains wet with rain, those two foremost of men, began to discharge shafts feathered in gold. And reaching the son of Rāvana in the sky and soaked in blood those golden arrows, fell down on earth. And those two best of men, hurt with his arrows, became more effulgent and baffled the shafts discharged by the Rākshasa. Thereupon Rāma and Lakshmana began to aim their sharp shafts to the direction whence the arrows came down. And stationed in his chariot that mighty car-warrior disturbed all quarters with his arrows and pierced Daçaratha’s sons with sharp shafts won by him.
Then what made him a threat.?
Simple, his weapons. Becoming invisible was merely one of his sorcery skill. The most dreaded ability was to create infallible weapons using his magical powers. These weapons were impossible to counter. And would've killed anyone. In the first instance, he transformed serpents into arrows using his magic and knocked out Rama and Lakshmana. Rama and Lakshmana being parts of Vishnu, used this divine essence to preserve their life. Anyone else would've been instantly killed, unless he is protected by a boon or are beings like Brahmarishis.
Neither the highly powerful Asuras, nor the exceedingly strong monkeys, nor the celestials along with the Gandharbas, having him of an hundred sacrifices at their head are,—capable of delivering (any one) from these dreadful arrowy bonds, which had been forged by Indrajit of tortuous deeds by help of illusion. These serpents—offspring of Kadru—are sharp-fanged and venomous; and had bound thee as arrows through the potency of illusion. O Rāma having truth for prowess, thou art fortunate,—along with that destroyer of foe in fight, Lakshmana.
Indrajit gained this ability after fire sacrifice at Nikumbhila sanctuary. That's why it was necessary to interrupt it, once he gained this power, the opponent would basically be oneshotted.
The next one is his Brahmastra. Indrajit knew unique ways to use Brahmastra. In Sundara kanda, he used it as a rope to bound Hanuman. After demons tied the already bound Hanuman with other ropes, Brahmastra neutralized itself.
There appears to be a drawback to using the Brahmastra in this manner if it neutralizes itself (not due to being countered by another Brahmastra or weapon, but through its own effect), it won't work again on that particular opponent. Apparently, Brahmastra has an insane amount of ego,.
Being bound with bark, that powerful (monkey) got himself freed from the binding of the weapon, for the binding force of a Brahmā weapon becomes null when there is any other binding. And beholding that best of monkeys tied up with bark and liberated from the binding of the weapon, Indrajit reflected that the binding force of the Brahmā weapon became powerless when there was any other binding. "Alas, (those Rakshas) have rendered my mighty deed fruitless. They know not the action of Mantras. And on the Brahma weapon being baffled, any other weapon cannot effect anything; and thus we have all been placed in a critical predicament."
We can see this in another scenario, in Yudha Kanda, section 73.
Indrajit used Brahmastra to empower his bow and chariot, and became invincible in combat. All of his weapons had the energy of this weapon and also nothing could've defeated him because he was protected by it.
And then that (Rākshasa) skilled in weapons acquired a Brāhma weapon (from that Deity), and inspired his bow and car with mantras. On that weapon having been invoked,²⁶⁸ and on (the god of Fire) also having been worshipped, the firmament furnished with the suns and stars and planets was afflicted with affright.
He single handedly defeated Rama’s army, even knocking out Rama and Lakshmana, with only Hanuman and Vibhishana left standing.. Brahmastra won't work against Hanuman as it was rendered futile earlier in Sundara kanda.
Hanuman now brought divine herbs and revived everyone in the army including Rama and Lakshmana. Now, Brahmastra's effect was neutralized on them too. We can see in Yudha Kanda section 80, Despite using it, the outcome was different than what happened earlier., neither it worked agsinst Rama and Lakshmana, nor it protected him from them.
Indrajit’s illusions were never an issue., His mastery over Brahmastra and ability to create infallible weapons were.
Opponents like Arjuna, Bhishma, Drona, and Karna would be instantly killed if he used any of these weapons on them as they don't have divine essence like Rama or Lakshmana to save themselves.. Lakshmana would've been knocked out but won't be killed due to his divinity.
Doesn't matter whether he's hiding or not,. It was never a decisive factor. For fair conditions, it'd be necessary to avoid all his boons and Brahmastra too. In this case, he cannot beat Lakshmana. Although the final duel between Lakshmana and Indrajit was very close with divine beings protecting Lakshmana from Indrajit’s weapons mid duel.
The others would be squashed like bugs even if Indrajit doesn't utilise any boon. He simply has the vastly superior feats compared to all of them combined.
