Love and Friendship
Love and Friendship
To the great Aristotle’s mind,
A friendship was hard to define,
For friendships were of different kind;
And these could vary across time.
Some based on common interest,
And some on close proximity;
But the friendship by far the best,
Was soulful equanimity.
With the years people move away,
Old interests fade new ones intrude,
And old relationships decay,
As new friendships now spread their root.
But the friendship forged with the mind,
Is like the North Star ever firm,
To interests, space and time is blind,
And constant as stars around turn.
True friendship to self-interest blind,
And always offers true counsel;
Judges not, always speak its mind,
For good friends wish each other well.
True friends will never genuflect;
But treat each other with respect,
In trouble the world turns away,
But true friends will forever stay.
Beyond the sexual chemistry,
Love too must pass the friendship test;
For love loses intensity,
If it does not on friendship rest.
