After Krishna, who are the top 10 most intelligent characters in the Mahabharata?
After Krishna, who are the top 10 most intelligent characters in the Mahabharata?
There are many characters in the Mahabharat, with each one having good and bad qualities. Many characters are similar in intelligence, but differ in their ethical characteristics. Hence I have tried to give intelligence ratings as well as ethical ratings of the major characters in this answer. However, this is not a definitive list.
I have given a scale, where the marking is out of 10 being highest and 0, lowest. 10 on both intelligence and ethics is reserved for Shri Krishna.
10. Duryodhana
(Intelligence Scale – 6, Ethical Scale – 1): Despite all his evil, Duryodhana was fairly intelligent. He masterminded several plans against Pandavas and was successfully able to send them to exile. Duryodhana perhaps knew that he was on the wrong side, but he was so consumed by his jealousy and passions that on being provoked by Shakuni, he always chose to do the wrong things.
9. Yuyutsu
(Intelligence Scale – 7, Ethical Scale – 6 ): The only Kaurava to survive the Kurukshetra war. He was intelligent enough to shift to the side of dharma on Pandavas side, right before the start of the Kurukshetra war.
8. Sahdeva
(Intelligence Scale – 7, Ethical Scale – 7): Sahdev is said to have possessed the highest wisdom among all his brothers; however, he had pride in his intelligence and did not take any major decisions in the epic.
7. Yudhishthir
(Intelligence Scale – 6, Ethical Scale – 8): Known as Dharmaraja Yudhishthir, while his understanding of the Dharma was excellent by the book, his practical and contextual understanding of Dharma was not the same. Even after having complete knowledge of Dharma, he bet not only his kingdom but also his princess. However, he had some redeeming points, namely – getting through the Yaksha prashnas and his popularity being a righteous king.
6. Arjun
(Intelligence Scale – 7, Ethical Scale – 7): Arjun was perhaps the best warrior (officially) in the epic and was chosen by Shri Krishna for giving the key teaching – Gita. Being the chosen one for the teachings indicate that Arjun is the character with whom most people could correlate, as he was not too proud, and was very sincere and intelligent.
5. Bhim
(Intelligence Scale – 7, Ethical Scale – 7.5): Among the Pandavas, Bhim seems to be the most reliable Pandava as he was the only one who at least expressed his anger to the insult of Draupadi, the other Pandavas were simply paying lip service to the dishonor of their own wife. Bhim was also the one who had advised Yudhishthir to give death penalty to Jayadrath.
4. Kunti/Draupadi/Gandhari
(Intelligence Scale – 7, Ethical Scale – 8): The mother of Pandavas was a very wise and intelligent woman. After the lakshagrah incident, it was Kunti who was the decision maker for day to day activities of Pandavas – whether it was asking Bhima to go to fight Bakasur or their rationing of food. She consoled Draupadi quite well after the disrobing incident and did not choose to stay in the Hastinapur palace after the Pandavas were sent to 13 years exile. While she hid the fact that Karna was her eldest son, due to societal reasons, she brought it out at the time of war when it was most needed.
Draupadi was the heroine of the epic and also one of the most powerful women behind the war. She was not an abla-naari (as is used commonly for Indian women in the past), but a very courageous and self-respectful woman who challenged the so called men of honor (Bhishma, Drona and Pandavas) on their rights on betting a woman and not taking any action to protect her dignity.
Gandhari was also a very righteous woman, who reprimanded everyone on Draupadi’s insult and always insisted Dhritarashtra to treat the Pandavas as equally as his own sons.
3. Abhimanyu
(Intelligence Scale – 7.5 , Ethical Scale – N/A): Abhimanyu was a truly intelligent individual. He was able to understand the Chakravyuha formation in his mother’s womb by simply listening to his father telling her about the Chakravyuha stages. He was under the tutelage of Shri Krishna who taught him the art of warfare while the Pandavas were in exile, and thought of him as a highly skilled warrior. Someone who was trained by Krishna himself has to be high on the intelligence scale.
I’m not applying the ethical scale to Abhimanyu as his role in the epic was mainly limited to the Kurukshetra war.
2. Shakuni
(Intelligence Scale – 8.5, Ethical Scale – 2): The mastermind behind the Mahabharat war. Shakuni was behind several plots to bring down the Pandavas. Starting from poisoning Bhima’s food to arranging the Pandavas to stay in Lakshagrah (house of wax), to the dice game and eventually the Kurukshetra war. Shakuni’s plots were the major reason behind the Mahabharat war and by doing this he ultimately fulfilled his desire of destroying the Kuru clan.
1. Vidur
(Intelligence Scale - 9, Ethical Scale - 9): The most intelligent person in the Mahabharat after Shri Krishna would be Vidur. He was the one who was consulted even by Bhishma Pitamah for advice. Vidur always sided with Dharma, unlike many other elders of Hastinapur like Bheeshma and Drona who thought themselves to be tied to the throne. Always favoring the righteous Pandavas, he was also the only one who vehemently opposed the disrobing of Draupadi. He always used to give frank advice to Dhritarashtra as well. The Mahabharata war would have been avoided had Dhritarashtra paid heed to the advice of Vidur.
