How arrogant was Draupadi?
How arrogant was Draupadi?
Yudhisthira admired Draupadi for her beauty and diligence.
“She retires to bed last and she is the first one to wake up. She looks after the cowherds and the shepherds. She knows everything about what should be done and what should not be done.”
The princess was fiery, not intimidated by adversity and well read. The elders Drona, Bhishma, Vidhur, Kripa etc hung their heads and expressed their inability to fight on Yudhisthira’s behalf after he lost his kingdom in the game of dice. Draupadi clad In a single stained garment stood in the Assembly full of men and argued. Since the Pandav had staked himself before he staked her, she was not a slave hence. Further she sought her husbands freedom and weapons when Dhritrastra granted her three boons.
She was righteous and hence suffered. Though angry with Yudhisthira for his love for dice and consequently staking her, Panchali stood by him.
“Though he is himself unskilled, the king was challenged in this Sabha by those who are skilled, evil minded and deceitful, those who love the game of dice. How can it be said he chose voluntarily ? The pure hearted and foremost among the Kurus and the Pandavs was robbed of his senses by inclinations towards deceit. “
While in exile for twelve years, Panchali was the only Pandava wife who was with her husbands all through in the rough terrains.
In the thirteenth year of anonymity, the once queen was the maid to queen Sudeshna dressing her hair and warding off advances of General Kichaka. He dragged her by her hair and kicked her in the presence of her husband and King Virata. The protector was unable to protect looking on helplessly at her humiliation. She took it all valorously but got him killed by Bhim in the darkness of night without her husbands coming to harms way.
Panchali was righteous but not docile. She had all through sought retribution for the wrong done to her husbands, sons and herself.
