EGO- AN IMPEDIMENT TO HAPPINESS

EGO- AN IMPEDIMENT TO HAPPINESS
Narender (name changed) was born into an opulent family and bestowed all the bounties by his indulgent parents. His father was a civil servant, who served the government in various capacities and his mother had the pedigree which the hoi-polloi, the flotsam and jetsam were envious of and would always aspire to acquire.
Her parents and the luxuriant, deluxe family virtually owned a quarter of the wealth of the state they hailed from. The petite woman was trained to be a classical dancer and a singer of remarkable repute. She honed these skill sets diligently. To sleep well in life, she whetted her appetite and was to strop the aesthetic skills to an optimal level. She grasped these nuances from the Maharani- her mother pretty early in life and that provided her with a head start over her compatriots.
Narender, blessed with this extraction and bloodline was naturally expected by the ménage to expand the family fortunes. While still in the cradle, it was decreed that the child would be educated in estimable and illustrious schools and colleges. The family was suffused with jollity and animated exuberance. The world of the cock-a-hoop and airy family came crashing when it was detected the child was suffering from dyslexia. ‘He is mentally retarded,’ over-reacted the distraught father. The danseuse-songstress was aghast.
It was as if lightning had struck the family and happiness was swiftly supplanted by an eerie silence of disconsolance. Why were they engulfed and subsumed by negative emotions and feelings?
Exalted expectations tend to diminish joy when humans begin linking and conjoining happiness with events, situations and individuals. Normally, the human mind is wont to postpone happiness and the propertied family had advanced this state of mind.
Invariably, humans postpone happiness by not living in the present moment, deferring happiness. For instance, a child arrives on planet earth and it is widely expected that upon completion of educational edification he would be ensconced in a reputable job, then get married and procreate. The unabated cycle would be continued ………and perhaps in the winter of his life the child, now a grandfather would finally attempt the pursuit of happiness.
This indeed was the state of mind of Narender’s parents and the Sakya king Suddhodhana. The Sakya king fervently and passionately expected young prince Siddhartha to ascend the throne after him. But Siddhartha was in search of expression of joy and the ultimate reality. He cast the princely garments to adorn ochre robes. The father was dismayed and rendered speechless.
Living in the present moment is the genuine expression of joy and happiness and this is nothing but achieving enlightenment.
The mental state of ego can be closely examined at the coattails of happiness.  At a cursory level the word ego means- amor propre, self-conceit or self-importance.
However, psycho analysts view the subject radically differently. For them ego is that part of a human which mediates between the conscious and the unconscious and is verily responsible for a reality check and sense of personal identity.
Philosophers delve deeper and try to fathom ego as a conscious thinking subject.  Therefore, it is a multi- dimensional motif. Ego when cultured and harnessed effectively can spur an individual to scale the summit, but to the bovine, obtuse and imperceptive individual it acts a road block in pursuit of achieving stated goals, as they operate from victim or guilt consciousness where the vision gets blurred.
Ironically a timorous or a shy person who is encompassed by negative emotions such as diffidence, timidity or wariness becomes a prisoner and victim of the mind games.
But in reality, shyness is attributive of an egotistical state. Why? As the individual is not natural; the creation of the universe needs to be, inevitably, natural, guileless and unpretentious. As the intrinsic quality of the geometry of creation is its pristine beauty. Truly childlike is the infant who can perform, say Pavan Mukta asana, devour a chocolate or render a speech with remarkable felicity and aplomb. Effort is an act of the body while effortlessness is quality of a cultured and cultivated mind.
Let us imagine sitting in the swathes of large fields while observing the enchantress called the Universe; we examine azure blue sky, wafting clouds, flock of birds moving in patterns in complete harmony. Or in the darkness of night we are mesmerised with planets, stars dotting the majestic skyscape.
Or say in a corn field, individuals can observe an entire spectrum of field of flowers. We look at all the flowers from the prism of our mind and soak seamlessly in the atmosphere.
These are effortless acts, where the mind does not draw any comparisons. The ethereal beauty encompasses our minds. The mind does not posit one cloud against the other, one rainbow against another, sunrise from sunset, one flock of birds against the other, one set of stars against another or one set of flowers against the other. The mind is merely observing and appreciating various facets of nature in its aggregate and totality, with mindful awareness and breathing.
Sage Ashtavakra, opined that witnessing these acts of nature when the mind virtually halts and individuals do not juxtapose or collate one against the other is that exalted state when humans drop all cravings and desires and look at life in its entirety and inclusiveness. We are one with nature and its manifestations. However, the bedrock of this state is when humans are neither critical nor judgemental and do not attach strings to their thought process.
There is a subterranean axis between happiness, ego and a non- judgemental mind. Humans can reinforce the positive aspects of ego (self-esteem) and appreciate jollity, radiance and happiness by dropping judgemental positions.

IGNORANT AND INTELLIGENT PEOPLE

IGNORANT AND INTELLIGENT PEOPLE
Ignorant people often opine that positive affirmations, chanting of evocative mantras and meditations are not efficacious steps to ensure recovery from any problematic situation.
“To claim that my body is well or being healed when it is not,
is only to tell a lie,” said one distinguished man several aeons ago.
This is virtually traversing the high road of ignorance.
Chanting powerful prayers and mantras and undertaking rigorous meditations generates harmonious conditions in the human mind which in turn releases positive endorphins. This provides the subconscious state of mind with a blueprint for the execution of the work to be done -that of healing and rehabilitation.
When an individual decides to build a house, an architect prepares drawings and designs of a complete, beautifully designed house. It is admitted that during the time of preparation of the design there was only a mental picture of a dwelling place in the mind of the architect. But without any doubt the seeds to build a house were very much etched in the mind of the architect.
Those with contrarian and antipathetic thought process cannot debunk the idea stating that the architect was merely weaving a tale of falsehoods.
The architect would meanwhile diligently plan a strategy to lay the foundation and structure of the house to be built.
Therefore alcoholics, addicts, diseased or even healthy individuals construct a string of positive, uplifting thoughts through powerful imagery of the mind, and sooner than later these will manifest on the physical plane.
Humans need to harness their intelligence effectively in structuring the kind of life that they choose to live in.
Men in prehistoric times would be exuberant when they could garner food for consumption growing anywhere, and then faithfully and patiently waited for innumerable years for this miracle to recur and they chanced upon yet another crop.
In this age of technology humans have upgraded their skill sets and deploy superior intelligence, preparing and planning much in advance; the kind of crops they wish to produce and significantly the amount which is considered necessary and essential. This is the quintessential transition in the thought process of man.
Humans today do not sit on their haunches hoping for an extraordinary event to take place, that perhaps wheat or barley as desired would fortuitously mushroom out of nowhere.
It is therefore most desirable that intelligent men and women appreciate the Laws of the Mind. These are universal; the Law of Acceptance, the Law of Gratefulness, the Law of Attraction, the Law of Responsibility and the Law of Resoluteness.
The human mind skilfully and intelligently pulls out the weeds which impede our progress. We are assisted in this process by continuously making positive affirmations, chanting and meditation so that we can develop and train our minds to undertake this sagacious activity. This is true for all human beings and especially those suffering from ill health and in particular for the recovery of alcoholics and addicts.
Simultaneously, intelligent people need to deal with those disposed with negative or antipathetic thoughts skilfully. In our daily lives, we may encounter several such individuals in our orbit. We need not fret and fume about their behavioural patterns as it impacts our thoughts. The more we complain about them, the more it diminishes clarity in our mind and reduces our aura.
Samuel Johnson succinctly put it, “Whoever has limited knowledge of human nature and seeks happiness by changing everything but his own attitude, will waste his life in futile efforts.”
Intelligent souls unlike their ignorant compatriots exude radiance and positivity. They are blessed with efficacious thoughts and maintain jollity in their daily activities, exuding a calm and tranquil persona. Besides, they are non- judgemental while analysing others. Most importantly they are thankful and grateful to events taking place in life. Being constantly thankful provides aperture in life for blessings to flow from nature.
Those endowed with superior intelligence do not focus on negative aspects in another person’s life. This is easier said than done, as our mind is wired to operate in such a manner. However, superior intelligence makes us appreciate the fact that if the person is behaving in an aberrant manner, it is quite possible either some deviant occurrence had taken place in his life or he or she is carrying past baggage. Realising the transitory nature of life and events, it is perspicacious to ignore what one sees on the surface.
Prudence and wisdom lies in not making the misadventures of others our own. The mind should be robust and hardy to wade through the swathes of such cobwebs. An enfeebled mind starts imitating and imagining the problems. One may begin to suffer from psychosomatic pestilence quite unnecessarily. An intelligent person instead attempts to salvage the situation by providing a solution. More often than not what people need is empathy, not sympathy.
For instance, an intelligent person will realise that an alcoholic needs to be taken to a rehab centre, Alcoholics Anonymous and simultaneously should undergo the Happiness Programme of the Art of Living.
Responsible and intelligent individuals empower themselves and society by empowering themselves. They do not blame, or play the vicarious game of victim or guilt consciousness. Instead they provide radical solutions to combat muddled up situations. This is the only discerning way out. Taking ownership of the problem is the only way to combat one.
Ignorant individuals shy away from confronting uncomfortable situations head-on, while intelligent and robust minds are aware of the problem and accept it, to find alternative paradigms to change the situation.
There is only way to bring about change – that is the way forward. Intelligent people deal with negativity by dispelling it and not being overpowered by the conflicting situations emanating. They do not fritter opportunities and moments in the present by looking back in regret. They look ahead and move forward and become trail blazers.

UNRAVELLING HUMAN EGO

UNRAVELLING HUMAN EGO
Before Sachin, there was the Napoleon of Indian cricket – Sunil Gavaskar. In the lexicon of the game, the two Mumbaikars were unanimously hailed as ‘Little Masters’. They dominated the game like colossuses and then, a time came for them to hang up their boots. But as perspicacious individuals they reinvented themselves to don new ‘Avatars’ in their post playing days.
Thus, retirement from any profession is an arduous task as it fraught with several uncertainties and imponderables. This is particularly true of bureaucrats who get encumbered with power and pelf and therefore swallow their pride and ego post retirement, to remain active.
Sunil Gavaskar famously remarked that the admirers and followers of the game ought to say, ‘Why now?’ instead of ‘Why not?’ This tiny difference ensures a safe passage for a distinguished cricketer or any other celebrity figure from the cauldron to the sanctuary of the pavilion, without having to compromise on prestige and self-respect.
Meanwhile, M. S. Dhoni the only captain in cricketing history who has embellished the shelves of the BCCI by scalping all the three International cricketing trophies (World Twenty 20, Champions Trophy and the World Cup) grabbed eyeballs when he quit leadership of the longer version of the game, before taking the tally to a hundred tests. More recently he caught everyone off-guard, quitting the captaincy of the shorter version of the game, when he was virtually on the cusp of creating history in this cricketing-insane nation, being just one shy of sporting the 200th cap as captain.
He who masters the concept of the ‘Art of Leaving’ with humility becomes the monarch of his mind and thereby subjugates various cravings and avarices only to sublimate the three-letter word EGO. He is then truly on the path of the ‘Art of Living’ where the mind wades through the swathes of hankering to reside in the present moment. The mind then becomes a Buddha.
Robert M Pirsig’s ‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance’ was to sell 5 million copies after the renowned author faced rejection by 121 publishers. Would not have the mind been eclipsed by Cassandras of doubt and Prophets of doom? Further, the ego and self-respect belaboured and pummelled.
Ego needs to be distinguished from self-respect. While former focusses more on self-esteem and self-importance of an individual, the latter human trait primarily deals with honour and respect of an individual.
Every morning upon completion of my Sadhana, which includes practice of the rhythmic breathing technique of Sudarshan Kriya and reading a page of ‘Celebrating Silence’ (a compilation of knowledge sheets as uttered by H. H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar), I browse through the Times of India.
It has become quotidian within my mental frame work to peruse through inspirational quotes. Today’s quotes struck a deep chord.
One, by Mike Tyson – ‘It’s ludicrous these mortals even attempt to enter my realm.’
And the other, by Guru Gobind Singh, ‘All human beings have the same eyes, the same ears, the same body composed of earth, air, fire and water. The names Allah and Abhekh are for the same God; Recognise the whole human race as one.’
Two warriors and amazingly contrasting personalities. Mike Tyson the brawny and muscular boxer who lorded in the ring after Mohammed Ali became infamous for rape, sexual encounters, drug abuse, alcoholism, a prison term and proselytization (Mallik Abdul Aziz).
Panjab and India celebrate the 350th anniversary of the 10th Sikh Guru- Shri Guru Gobind Singh. He was a spiritual master, warrior, poet and philosopher who established the Sikh Panth through the clarion call of ‘Wahe Guru Ka Khalsa, Wahe Guru Ki Fateh’.
Scratch the surface of Tyson the combatant and he appears to be highly egoistical with all his dalliances while Shri Guru Gobind Singh, the intrepid warrior sublimated his ego to soldier on against the Mephistopheles’ within and without.
Psychoanalysts while unravelling the human ego stumble upon it as that feature of the human mind which oscillates between the conscious and the subconscious stages. It is an effective tool to scrutinize or gauge the personal identity of an individual.
Egocentrism is a step further, almost a narcissistic state which is a salient feature of pre-operational thought, which refers to the inability to distinguish between one’s perspective and someone else’s perspective. Individuals who get ensnared with the sheer enormity and magnitude of power, fame or wealth and succumb to its trappings of masculinity end up becoming highly ego-centric.
‘Mirror. Mirror on the Wall, Who’s the fairest of them all?’, lines from a fairy tale that we all heard as children. In the universe of social media few are spared from the addiction known as ‘Selfitis’, posting pictures (some of them!) on Facebook, WhatsApp, LinkedIn and Instagram among others. In order to fuel our ego and ego-centrism, we have willy-nilly become virtual search engines of our own morphed images which is detached from realism.
But all aspects of ego are not devilish or demonic. Philosophy and philosophers engage the human mind towards the subject of metaphysics. In this realm humans unravel ego as a conscious subject of the thought process.
We cannot quantify the reservoir of energy in the atomic bomb called ego as we are unable to measure the potential of a human being through the prism of the naked eye. The centrifugal part of ego, if viewed philosophically, is a bundle of positive energy. On its circumference are negatively charged particles. However, deep within lies dormant efficacious energy.
This energy can be exploited to scale the summit only through spiritual practices and Sadhana. Thus, we need to disambiguate the word ego and look at it from a more holistic manner so that the concepts get unravelled.
A discerning observer can kindle the flame of unlearning by conjoining the triad of ego, self-pride and self-respect to separate the chaff from the grain.
‘Letting go of your ego opens the door to taking a new and creative course of action,’ says Suzanne Mayo Frindt.

Tare Zameen Par- As shared

In the movie "Taare Zameen Par", the art teacher tells the rude & cursing father of the dyslexic kid about "Solomon Islands", where the tribals don’t cut down a tree. *They surround the tree & curse it for hours every day.* Within a few weeks, the tree
dries up & dies.

Difficult to believe?  How can intangible, invisible thoughts & words kill a tree?

If you read Bruce H. Lipton’s THE BIOLOGY OF BELIEF, you will think a dozen times before saying something demoralizing to yourself or to the people you love.

In this book, Mr. Lipton details the power of conscious & subconscious mind.

The subconscious mind is million times more powerful than the conscious mind & decides most of the things in our lives according to the beliefs it has.

Many times we fail to change an unpleasant habit despite our will-power & conscious efforts. It is because the habit gets so strongly programmed in our subconscious mind that the efforts made by our conscious mind hardly make any difference.

*Conscious Mind is just a shadow* *of our Unconscious Mind..*

So, when the tribals of Solomon Islands curse a tree, they are actually installing negative & harmful beliefs in the tree’s emotion (yes, trees have emotions).

Within few days, those negative emotions becomes a belief & eventually changes the molecular architecture of the tree & kill it from inside..

2500 years ago, when Buddha said *‘You are what you think',* actually he was telling a scientific fact which is now proved correct by Quantum Physics & Molecular Biology.

The book has a special chapter on Conscious Parenting where it talks about the beneficial & harmful effects of what parents say to their children..

*If you are a parent and you keep cursing your child in the name of constructive criticism, you are installing beliefs in their mind which will keep harming them forever..*

But if you keep appreciating them sincerely, you are installing beliefs in their mind which will help them in their entire life..*

Also be careful of what you keep saying to yourself.

Repetition of words & thoughts is the best way to install a belief in your subconscious mind.

If you keep saying you are a loser, don’t be surprised if you become a loser within a few months or years.

If your friends keep saying such things to you, there is no harm in saying a quick goodbye to them.

May be you value their friendship a lot. But you must value yourself more than such friendship.

Accept all people as they are. Love all people unconditionally ( later Hinduism adapted it as vasudeva kutumbakam).

Always keep saying to yourself *I am healthy, wealthy, happy, successful & prosperous!*

Gurudev today @ Tokyo     *Do away with negativity!*

Today, scientists say – if you are talking negatively, or listening to negativity, or indulging in any negative conversation, the hypothalamus, which is located at the back of your head starts shrinking. And if the hypothalamus starts shrinking, then the body gets susceptible to many illnesses. So, it is very important to get away from the cycle of negative thinking, negative conversations, and dwelling or taking pride in any kind of negativity.

7 Question "Step Zero Inventory."

7 Question "Step Zero Inventory."
By Joe McFadden in BIG BOOK SPONSOR

When someone asks me if I will sponsor them I give them the following 7 questions to get familiar with them and create a sense of urgency to get in to the Big Book which will lead them to the Power that will solve all their problems. I have had such a tremendous amount of success with the people who have done it... most have completed the steps and AMENDS! I call this a "Step Zero Inventory."

Here are the 7 questions:

1. In looking back over your life – what memories are still dark, painful and guilt ridden?

2. In what ways do you consider yourself an inadequate person?

3. Who do you resent – and why? Be specific and nasty as possible.

4. What do you consider to be your defects of character?

5. In your ongoing human relations – what seems to the recurring theme?

6. Rather realistic or not, what is your goal in life?

7. In what way do you believe that A.A. can, if any, help you with achieve these goals?

We will mutually agree on a completion date. You will call me on that date so that we can get together and discuss your answers to these 7 questions and apply the Big Book's Solution to them. (As a rule, if I'm working with someone and they procrastinate past the deadline I consider them not serious about their recovery and finding a solution to their problems - I will then, as it states on pg 96 in Chapter 7 Working with Others, move on to help someone else who wants help and is willing to do the work.)

***(I did not come up with this on my own... this was given to me by Clancy I in 1993 when I hosted him while he was speaking in San Antonio)
