God grant me the Serenity

God grant me the Serenity

to accept the things

I cannot change;

Courage to change

the things I can;

and Wisdom

to know the difference.

Thy will, not mine, be done.

I'M PART OF THE WHOLE

At once, I became a part–

if only a tiny part–of a cosmos….

AS BILL SEES IT, p. 225

When I first came to A.A.,

I decided that “they” were very nice people–

perhaps a little naive, a little too friendly,

but basically decent, earnest people

(with whom I had nothing in common).

I saw “them” at meetings –

after all, that was where “they” existed.

I shook hands with “them” and,

when I went out the door, I forgot about “them.”

Then one day my Higher Power,

whom I did not then believe in,

arranged to create a community project outside of A.A.,

but one which happened to involve many A.A. members.

We worked together, I got to know “them” as people.

I came to admire “them,” even to like “them” and,

in spite of myself, to enjoy “them.”

“Their” practice of the program in their daily lives–

not just talk at meetings –

attracted me and I wanted what they

had. Suddenly the “they” became “we.”

I have not had a drink since.

Out of the Dark

Self-searching is the means

by which we bring new vision, action, and grace

to bear upon the dark and negative side of our natures.

With it comes the development of that kind of humility

that makes it possible for us to receive God’s help.

Yet it is only a step. We will want to go further.

We will want the good that is in us all,

even in the worst of us, to flower and grow.

But first of all, we shall want sunlight,

nothing much can grow in the dark.

Meditation is our step out into the sun.

“A clear light seems to fall upon us all–

when we open our eyes.

Since our blindness is caused by our own defects,

we must first deeply realize what they are.

Constructive meditation is the first requirement

for each new step in our spiritual growth.”

A good self-examination of AA attitude

might include the question,

“Am I a dead weight in AA?”

No matter why any individual goes to meetings,

no matter what YOU think YOU are bringing to it

or getting out of AA –

if it isn’t to locate a newcomer to take through the steps

and get him to God,

you just might be wasting your, his and God's time.

It doesn't matter how many pithy shares you launch,

no matter how much coffee you make,

how many service meetings you attend,

how many times you give out your phone number

to someone you know damn well is never going to call you –

if you aren’t going to meetings

with the sole purpose of finding another alkie

to take through the twelve steps –

then you are dragging the fellowship into the ground,

and one day when its completely gone,

when no meetings exist anymore

which come close to resembling the original purpose,

you should not wonder why.

God is no stranger to anonymity

and often appears in human affairs

in the guises of “luck,” “chance,”

or “coincidence.”

It seems in every interaction there is something to learn

if we can only see ourselves as students.

If we can humble ourselves,

and allow ourselves to see the world

without our own beliefs and dogmas,

then we could see so much beauty

awaiting us in each momen

 *The Sound of Silenced Letters*

We know the letter B doesn’t belong in subtle
But what has the letter C got to do in a muscle?
The role of the D in Wednesday we can’t define
Why should G be present in a gnat or in a sign?

To be honest, does the H in rhyme ring a bell?
And can the J in marijuana anybody smell?
Who knows why the K in knee won’t knock
And why the L in walk or in calf would not talk

The first M in mnemonic is hard to understand
Would the damned N in the column ever stand?
We can’t say the P in psalm or in psychology
And S alone gets tossed out from the debris

Is the T heard when you listen to a whistle?
W is not write, it’s wrong, don’t try to wrestle
X is the mistake in a faux pas, get the clue?
Hush, no rendezvous with Z, goodbye, adieu!

QUARANTINE YOUR TROUBLES

QUARANTINE YOUR TROUBLES

Around the Year with Emmet Fox

When you are praying or "treating"

about a particular thing,

you should handle it, mentally,

very carefully indeed.

The ideal way is not to think about it at all

except when you are actually praying about it.

Moreover, to talk to other people about it

is exceedingly likely to invite failure.

When a new problem presents itself to you,

decline to consider it except in the light of Truth.

I call this "putting a subject, in quarantine."

Even an old long-standing problem

can be "put in quarantine" today,

if you mean business and will resolutely break

the habit of constantly thinking over that problem.

Whenever you think about any subject,

you are treating it with your thought—

either for good or evil.

“The lip of truth

shall be established forever. . .”

FREEDOM IN FORGIVENESS

 FREEDOM IN FORGIVENESS

Around the Year with Emmet Fox

February 16

“If ye forgive men their trespasses,

your heavenly Father

will also forgive you”

Matthew 6:14

Setting others free means setting yourself free,

because resentment is really a form of attachment.

It is a cosmic truth

that it takes two to make a prisoner;

a prisoner and a jailer.

There is no such thing as being a prisoner

on one's own account.

Moreover, the jailer is as much a prisoner

as his charge.

When you hold resentment against anyone,

you are bound to that person by a mental chain.

You are tied by a cosmic tie to the thing that you hate.

The one person perhaps in the whole world

whom you most dislike is the very one

to whom you are attaching yourself

by a hook that is stronger than steel.

Is this what you wish?

Is this the condition

in which you desire to go on living?

Remember, you belong to the thing

with which you are linked in thought,

and at some time or other, if that tie endures,

the object of your resentment

will be drawn again into your life,

perhaps to work further havoc.

No one can afford such a thing;

and so, you must cut all such ties

by a clear act of forgiveness.

You must loose him and let him go.

By forgiveness you set yourself free;

you save your soul.

And because the law of love

works alike for one and all,

you help to save his soul too.

“Is it a girl or a boy?”

In the labour room at GMC Kolhapur, where a minimum of 20 vaginal deliveries take place in a span of 24 hours, resident doctors and interns interact with multiple pregnant women in labour.

Guiding them through the process of labour and successfully conducting the delivery of the baby,
The first question that the new mother asks her doctor, even before her placenta has been delivered is not- is my baby alright?
It is-
“Is it a girl or a boy?”
We might think we have moved forward from the gender bias as a country, but this illusion breaks into shards when- a new mother starts crying, the minute I tell her, it’s a girl.
As I continue stitching her episiotomy, she continues to cry and refuses to see or hold her baby. In another instance, the girl child’s grandmother refuses to accept the child and leaves her on the bench outside the labour room.
Seeing women and their relatives faces relieved and light up when they’re told- it’s a boy, in comparison to the earlier instance, as a doctor and even more so as a woman, more than disappointment, brought a sinking feeling.
30 days into my rotation, I decided I’d try and do something different.
Everytime I went and handed over a girl child to their relatives, I would smile and say- “maushi, Lakshmi aali, mala mithai pahije”
(Goddess Lakshmi has come to your home, you must distribute sweets today!)
It was slow, but I began to notice how the relatives would register what I said and smile. They would promise us the sweets and smile, however faint it was.

This marked the beginning, of me realising, doctors do hold the power to influence, to bring about change, not only with their knowledge and skills, but also with their words.

Have you see In anyone in The Art of Living get enlightenment?

Q : Have you see In anyone in The Art of Living get enlightenment?

Sri Sri : Yes, there are many who have this experience — they feel something and it starts happening. They have the ability to love everyone and be a nobody.

You don’t have to label yourself that ‘I am enlightened, I am enlightened’, not at all! If you want enlightenment, the first thing you need to remember is total detachment from all that you see, good or bad.

Do you still want enlightenment? Are you ready for it?

For enlightenment you need to have total detachment because it is your desire which is the only thing that blocks you from enlightenment. The moment you drop all that and say, “I want nothing and I am nothing”, that moment you realize that all the forms and names are nothing, they are all like waves in the ocean; the wave is nothing but the ocean. This conviction is enlightenment. The sea is there, the sun is there, the moon is there and like that I too am here, that is it.

Going beyond time is enlightenment. Not being constrained by space is enlightenment. Realizing you are love, everything else is love, that is enlightenment. Being so natural and feeling at home with everyone because there is no other, is enlightenment.
