Feelings

Feelings aren't real --> Does this apply to only the negative feelings? or is it more generic ?
I would like to hear your thoughts and take on the positive 'gut' feelings (so-called) that guide us in making numerous decisions everyday, and, also the negative 'gut' feelings that kind of tell us of something that is impending and better to be refrained from.

Weight loss - Japanese technique as received

Weight Loss: Follow THIS Japanese long breathing technique to lose weight
Weight loss means healthy eating and physical workout every day without fail. However, there are certain tricks and tips that can help you to amp up the speed of your weight loss. Earlier we had talked about how you should know your body type and follow diet and workout accordingly, how you can follow bedtime rituals which can again aid in weight loss. Just like these two, today we are sharing a Japanese weight-loss hack. We had earlier shared the Japanese hack of the Hara Hachi Bu and Japanese Tabata exercise.
Today we are talking about another Japanese method called Long-Breath Diet and it was discovered by an actor named Miki Ryosuke. In this Japanese weight-loss method, you have to follow this two-minute long-breath diet and you can shed 10 to 13 kgs in a matter of few weeks. If you are thinking about what to eat in this diet then let me tell you that there is no food involved here and it is just a simple yet effective breathing technique.
So, how Mr Miki discovered this super cool and easy method? As per reports, Mr. Ryosuke was once struggling from back pain and he was prescribed some exercises by doctors for relief. After doing the exercises, he realized not only the exercises helped him to eliminate back pain but also helped him to lose 13 kilos in a few weeks.
This method involves inhaling for three seconds and exhaling for seven seconds. How it works? For the unversed, the fat contains oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen and when we breathe, the oxygen reaches fat cells and in turn, divides them into carbon and water. Basically, the more oxygen your body uses the more fat you burn.
How to do the 2-minute long-breath diet exercise?
Stand still with one leg put forward and the other one behind.
Now strain your buttocks and transfer your body weight to your back foot.
Slowly start inhaling for 3 seconds and also lift your arms above your head.
Now exhale forcefully for 7 seconds while you strain your body muscles.
Perform this exercise every day for 2 to 10 minutes.
Apart from weight loss, this exercise will also help you to strengthen body muscles and boost metabolism.

CATCHING WILD PIGS*

CATCHING WILD PIGS*

Karl Marx once said,
"Remove one freedom per generation, and soon you will have no freedoms and no one will have noticed."

One day while the class was in the lab, a professor noticed one young man,  kept rubbing his back and stretching as if his back hurt.

The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him that he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country, who were trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new communist regime.

Then, the student looked at the professor and asked a strange question,

"Do you know how to catch wild pigs?"

The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punchline. The young man said that it was no joke.

"You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come every day to eat the free food.

When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming. At first, they are scared, but when they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence.

They get used to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side.

The pigs, which are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat that free corn again. You then slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd.

Suddenly, the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity."

The young man then told the professor,

"That is exactly what he sees happening in many countries. The governments keep pushing us towards Communism/Socialism and keep spreading the free corn out in the form of programmes such as supplemental income, tax credit for unearned income, tax exemptions, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops, welfare entitlements, medicine, drugs, etc., while we continually lose our freedoms, just a little at a time."

One should always remember two truths:

1. There is no such thing as a free lunch, and

2. You can never hire someone to provide a service for you cheaper than you can do it yourself.

If you see that all of this wonderful government 'help' is a problem confronting the future of democracy, there is hope.

If you think the free ride is essential to your way of life, then God help you when the gate slams shut!

"Most of the problems we face today are there because the people who work for a living are now outnumbered by those who vote for a living!

*Zohnerism* - as received

*Zohnerism* -  all about the twisting of simple facts to confuse people.

In 1997, 14 year old Nathan Zohner presented his science fair project to his classmates, seeking to ban a highly toxic chemical from it’s everyday use.

The chemical in question? Dihydrogen monoxide.

Throughout his presentation, Zohner provided his audience scientifically correct evidence as to why this chemical should be banned.

He explained that dihydrogen monoxide:

Causes severe burns in while it’s in gas form
Corrodes and rusts metal
Kills countless amounts of people annually
Is commonly found in tumors, acid rain etc.
Causes excessive urination and bloating if consumed
Zohner also noted that the chemical is able to kill you if you depend on it and then experience an extended withdrawal.

He then asked his classmates if they actually wanted to ban dihydrogen monoxide.

And so 43 out of the 50 children present voted to ban this clearly toxic chemical.

However…this chemical isn’t typically considered toxic at all.

In fact, dihydrogen monoxide is simply an unconventional name for water.

Nathan Zohner’s experiment wasn’t a legitimate attempt to ban water, but instead an experiment to get a representation of how gullible people can really be.

Also, all of the points that Zohner used to convey his point were 100% factually correct; he just skewed all of the information in his favor by omitting certain facts.

One journalist eventually dubbed this event as ‘Zohnerism’, where true facts are misled towards false conclusions.

And this occurs a lot more often than you think, especially when politicians, conspiracy theorists, etc., use proven facts to persuade people into believing false claims.

The fact that people can mislead, and be misled so easily, is highly unsettling.

History of BHU

Most of us know that the foundation of Golden Temple was laid by Mian Meer, a Muslim saint. But do you know who laid foundation of Banaras Hindu University?

In 1904, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (MMM) thought of establishing a University and started working whole time for it, leaving his lucrative law practice.

During the same period, Annie Besant and other leaders were also working for a similar cause and established Central Hindu College at Banaras.

In 1911, all joined hands and formed The Hindu University Society under the leadership of Pandit MMM with its headquarters at Allahabad.

Kashi Naresh, Dr Vibhuti Narain Singh donated 1300 acres of land at Banaras for this noble cause.

In the second quarter of 1914, a meeting of the society was held. On the agenda was just one item 'Whom should we invite to lay the foundation stone?'

All agreed that the foundation-stone should be laid by a 'pious personality'.

The question arose who is and where is such a saint?

One of the members suggested that there was one in Punjab but he is a Sikh.

MMM retorted, “Then what? We shall get the foundation stone laid by him.”

In May 1914, caring little for the searing summer heat MMM, with some of his followers, left for Sant Attar Singh's Ashram at Mastuana, situated at the borders of the then Nabha and Patiala States.

He traveled by train up to Sangrur, the capital of Jind State.

The Ashram was at a distance of approximately 8 Km. Pandit Ji removed his shoes at Sangrur Railway Station and started walking barefoot on the sandy road. When somebody asked him why he was doing so,  replied that he was going to meet a saintly person for a holy cause and hence, he should be humble and respectful.

The news that Pandit MMM was coming to Mastuana, spread like a wildfire.

One of Sant Attar Singh's followers, because of the summer heat and poor road condition, sent for a few mares, which Pandit Ji politely refused.

On his arrival at the Ashram, Pandit Ji found Sant Ji reciting Kabir's hymn:

*Awal Allah noor upaya kudrat ke sab bandey ek noor te sab jag upjay kaun bhaley kaun mandey*

On listening to the above hymn, Pandit Ji felt that he had come to the right place. It was decided to lay the foundation stone of the university on 24 December, 1914.

Sant Attar Singh travelled to Banaras in the private train of Maharaja Ripudaman Singh of Nabha along with Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala and reached Banaras a few days prior to the fixed date. At the railway station Pandit Ji, in the company of Maharaja Vibhuti Narain Singh, Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner and the Maharajas of Indore, Gwalior, Alwar and Darbhanga received Sant Attar Singh. The railway station was tastefully decorated with buntings and flowers. There was a carpet from the train up to the specially decorated carriage of the Kashi Naresh. As the Sant Ji's carriage, pulled by the hosts (not by horses), passed through the bazaars, the crowds showered petals from shops and house-tops. Outside the city, the public climbed up the trees to have a glimpse of Sant Ji. This warm reception continued unto the proposed site of the University, where special tents were put up for the guests' stay.

For 10 days there was continuous recitation (Akhand Paaths) of Guru Granth Sahib (Holy Sikh Scripture) in a specially decorated tent. The Maharajas, as well as the public, performed Sewa (selfless service) and Langar (Community Kitchen) was distributed for one and all. Gurbani Kirtan (Sikh Hymns) was recited in the morning and evening. It was attended by all.

Thirty-one persons adapted the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib at the end of the 10-day prayers. On the 10th day, Kashi Naresh Vibhuti Narain Singh handed over a trawl made of gold to Sant Attar Singh and 11 bricks of Gold were handed over to Sant Ji by Pandit Ji and other Maharajas one by one, which were laid in the foundation, dug for the building of Banaras Hindu University.

Pandit MMM also requested Sant Attar Singh to send his disciple Sant Teja Singh to head the Teacher Training College.

At the end of the ceremony, Sant Ji took Pandit Ji aside and said, “When we started Khalsa College at Amritsar in 1893, we admitted *one Hindu student, one Muslim and one Sikh* to start with.”

Catching the point,  MMM replied, “By all means.”
Pandit MMM was so impressed by the towering spiritual personality of Sant Ji that he, thenceforth, began to propagate that every Hindu family should have at least one member, the eldest son, as a Sikh in order to improve and cleanse Indian society.

TN Sheshan - As received

This is an experience that TN Seshan shared in a Management Seminar.

He was traveling in Uttar Pradesh with his wife for a picnic while he was the Chief Election Commissioner. On the way, they saw a large mango plantation filled with sparrow nests.

Seeing this, they went down there and his wife wanted to take two nests home.

The police escort called a young boy who was grazing cows in the fields and demanded to bring the nests down and offered to pay him Rs10. He refused, so Seshan raised the offer to Rs.50.

The policeman asked the boy to do it as Seshan was a big officer. The boy told Seshan and his wife ‘Saabji I will not do it for whatsoever you will give.’ He continued, ‘inside those nests, there will be baby sparrows, if I give you those nests to you, in the evening when mother sparrow returns with food for the babies and do not find them there, she will cry. I do not have the heart to see that’. Hearing this Seshan and his wife were shocked.

Seshan says my position and the IAS melted away in front of that little boy. I was in front of him like a mustard seed. They gave up their wish and after returning, this incident continued to haunt him with guilt for days. Education, position or social status in never the yardstick for the measure of humanity.

Knowledge is to know nature. We don’t achieve anything by gathering a lot of information. Life becomes blissful when you have knowledge, sense & wisdom.

*'Never say die' attitude..*

*'Never say die' attitude..*

A motivational story

An amazing story on Marvan Attapattu, Sri Lankan Cricketer.

It’s a story that Harsha Bhogle loves to tell, over and over again.

Making his debut in test cricket for Sri Lanka, Marvan scored a duck in his first innings. And again, in his second innings.

They dropped him. So he went back to the nets for more practice. More first-class cricket. More runs. Waiting for that elusive call.

And after twenty-one months, he got a second chance.

This time, he tried harder. His scores: 0 in the first innings, 1 in the second Dropped again, he went back to the grind. And scored tonnes of runs in first-class cricket. Runs that seemed inadequate to erase the painful memories of the Test failures.

Well, seventeen months later, opportunity knocked yet again. Marvan got to bat in both innings of the Test. His scores: 0 and 0. Phew!

Back to the grind. Would the selectors ever give him another chance? They said he lacked big-match temperament.

His technique wasn’t good enough at the highest level. Undaunted, Marvan kept trying.

Three years later, he got another chance. This time, he made runs. He came good. And in an illustrious career thereafter, Marvan went on to score over 5000 runs for Sri Lanka. That included sixteen centuries and six double hundreds.

And he went on to captain his country. All this despite taking over six years to score his second run in Test cricket. Wow ! What a guy!

How many of us can handle failure as well as he did ? Six years of trying, and failing. He must have been tempted to pursue another career. Change his sport perhaps. Play county cricket. Or, oh well, just give up. But he didn’t. And that made the difference.

The next time you are staring at possible failure or rejection, think of Marvan.

And remember this: If you don’t give up, if you believe in yourself, if you stay the course, the run will eventually come. What's more, you could even become a  leader one day.

One more thing, Marvan Attapattu is a qualified Chartered Accountant.

*THE COBRA EFFECT* Hope you know about a term named Cobra Effect?

*THE COBRA EFFECT* Hope you know about a term named Cobra Effect?

If not, it’s time that you learn about it.

The Cobra Effect is a term in economics. It refers to a situation when an attempted solution to a problem makes the problem worse.

This name was coined based on an incident in old colonial India.

By some reasons, there were too many venomous cobra snakes in Delhi. People were dying due to snake-bites and it became scary  for almost everyone to step out of their houses.

The government of the day had to get into action to stop this menace and it offered a silver coin for every dead cobra. The results were great, a large number of snakes were killed for the reward.

Eventually, however, it led to some serious unwanted consequences. After a short-term dip in cobra population, it started going up.

This was because few people began to breed cobras for the income. When the news reached the government, the reward program was scrapped, causing the cobra breeders to set the now-worthless snakes free. As a result, the cobra population further increased. The solution for the problem made the situation even worse.

The unintended consequence for a well-intention-ed idea led to making the problem worst.

Trying a new solution?

or

Planning to tackle an existing problem with a new idea?

Well, it’s time to pause and think about how people would respond to the new idea that may sound great on paper!

Specially the solutions that try to affect how people behave.

Every solution has consequences and those consequences may lead to certain situations where rather than solving a current problem, you may end up with more complex problems.

As they say the road to hell is paved with good intentions, the similar mistakes are happening around us everyday when the decision -makers fail to take a 360 degree view of all the possible outcomes of an action before implementation.

Nearly 2 years ago, city of Philadelphia in USA passed a "soda tax" -- a US $1 tax on a typical 2-liter bottle of soft-drink- as a "sin tax" in the national war on obesity. But the natives didn’t cut calories as a result of the tax on sweetened drinks, nor there was a shift towards any healthier option. Instead, most of them just drove outside the city to buy the same colas , from stores where they didn’t have to pay the tax. But the poorest paid more as they could not find it affordable to drive out of the city to buy their drinks. In the end , city suffered loss of revenue due to lower sales whereas the lower section society paid more .

The unintended consequence for a well-intentioned idea led to making the problem worst.

Even big & brilliant companies do the same mistake!

It is not that mistakes happen only with the government run programs, there're n numbers of examples in great private companies too where the best & brilliant people lose sight of certain negative outcomes due to the initial magic of seemingly great looking ideas .

The Nano Car - a small car that could never it make it big !

The car once touted as the world’s cheapest, Tata Nano, seems to be running into a dead end as sales and production is down to a trickle. The poor demand has resulted in Tata Motors shutting down the plant few months back.
.
A car considered as a brilliant product, launched in a segment having a billion dollar opportunity. Hope ran high , the company expected all present and potential two-wheeler owners would shift to Nano.

But they forgot to dwell deeper – a car marketed as ‘the cheapest car’ , created huge initial interest. But it never took off.

Later on, Ratan Tata admitted that the reason for failure of this idea was none other than the term which became synonymous with Nano – “The cheapest car”.

Buying a car in India is associated with social status and prestige; if a person owns a car, he is assumed to be successful and settled. But the word ‘cheap’ in its marketing campaigns spoiled everything.

The company also failed to dwell upon the competition from used-cars. Used cars (2nd hand cars) from other companies , which were much better in quality, space

and mileage were available to the same customer -segment at the same or lesser price than Nano .

An intelligent team of people failed to think about the above likely outcomes because it became temporarily blind by the brilliance of such a great idea, by the idea of tapping a billion-dollar opportunity.

Apple turning sour!

In 2017 Apple admitted that it was slowing down the speed of old iPhones as the batteries of those old phones were degrading with the passage of time.To make up on loss of brand image and to saistfy its erstwhile customers, it offered to cut its US $79 battery replacement feed down to US $29 as a way of apologizing.

This lower fee led to more people in 2018 ended up swapping their batteries — instead of upgrading to the latest iPhone models thus affecting new iPhone sales. As iPhone batteries became cheaper and easier to replace, fewer people are shelling out for new iPhones that can now cost up to US $1,449.

On January 2nd this year, Apple revealed that it was expecting a $9 billion loss in revenue due to weak iPhone demand that’s partly caused by more people replacing their batteries, according to a letter issued by CEO Tim Cook addressed to investors.

Slowing down of iPhones sales can be attributed to many external reasons too (better Chines phones, better Apps on Android phones etc ), but strategy of battery-replacement was an internal idea. It would have been handled better if people at top would have thought more about it , if they would have filtered this program from Cobra effect

*What's in it for you ?
Next time if you or your team has some brilliant idea , get your brilliant guys together in a room and think about the Cobra- effects before implementing that idea.

You can always fine-tune the idea to minimize the negative implications by spending few extra hours/days before rushing to announce it.

Don’t implement while you’re under the awe of the brilliance of a never -tested, nice-looking solution or idea, think about the Cobra-effects first.*
